Ready
To defend God’s honor, I accepted readily
Now the enemy advances steadily.
He pauses only to shout ungodly reproaches
I see anger and disdain as he approaches.
I am young, slender and ruddy
And mortal combat has been his life’s study
I have not reached full frame nor height
And he has known victory in every fight
Yet his armor, sword and shield are misplaced
For I am not like the others he has faced
No, this is not a battle between men
His foe is God because of his sin.
The outcome is certain despite his array
I will behead him this very day
They questioned my ability to handle this chore
But I have killed a lion and bear before.
God protected me from their paws
So with this one who has defied his laws.
For Goliath, my pouch holds a smooth stone.
A shepherd has time his skills to hone.
His heavy armor is thick and covers so well,
But just one opening is needed a giant to fell.
Running toward him, I take the offensive.
His unprotected head will prove expensive.
Out of my sling the weapon flies to its mark.
Immediately finding his forehead so stark.
It sinks deeply and ever so fatal.
There is no more clamor, only a lull
A crash to the earth announces his fate.
Judgment for looking upon us with hate.
An heroic deed has been done this day.
God saved Israel in his usual way.
The hour required one who would not fear it.
Calling for faith and things of the spirit.
Just a shepherd and an unknown youth
But old enough to know God’s truth.
